Strengthening Trade Ties with China

TL;DR: New Zealand strengthens trade with China, focusing on agriculture and innovation, aiming to double exports in the next decade.

New Zealand’s Focus on Chinese Market

Trade and Agriculture Minister Todd McClay emphasises the continuous appeal of New Zealand’s high-quality, safe products among Chinese businesses and consumers. Following his recent visits to Beijing, Harbin, and Shanghai, McClay is optimistic about deepening trade relationships. His discussions with various Chinese officials focused on enhancing collaboration in trade and agriculture.

Decade of Partnership

This year celebrates a decade of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, enhancing a trade relationship already exceeding $38 billion. “It’s a crucial economic tie for both nations,” McClay stated, highlighting the importance of supporting this partnership’s growth to boost New Zealand’s economy further.

Strategic Meetings and Opportunities

In Beijing, McClay explored further cooperation in agriculture innovation and processed wood products with his counterparts. His visit to Harbin included meetings with agriculture sector partners and discussions on increasing educational and tourism links with Heilongjiang province.

Looking Ahead

McClay praised the high value placed on New Zealand’s primary exports and discussed plans to double export values within the next decade. A significant trade and business mission to China later this year aims to capitalise on emerging opportunities and strengthen the Kiwi brand in this vast market.

“Engaging with over 500 million middle-class consumers presents a significant opportunity for New Zealand’s superior products,” McClay concluded, looking forward to fostering this vital international relationship.
