Roma Saleyard Sees Surge in Cattle Numbers with Steady Market Prices

In a significant increase from the previous week, the Roma Saleyard witnessed a total yarding of 8,025 cattle, marking an increase of 4,771. This week’s sale drew a diverse range of cattle from across Queensland, with additional consignments from New South Wales and South Australia. The sale featured a substantial number of medium weight steers from local sources, noted for their good quality.

Despite the influx of cattle, prices for light weight restocker steers remained consistent with the previous week, demonstrating active participation from local restockers. These steers sold for as high as 458.2 cents, averaging around 404 cents, showing a slight increase of 5 cents. Steers weighing between 280 to 330 kilograms reached a maximum of 404.2 cents, averaging at 366 cents per kilogram.

Medium weight steers, which were present in greater numbers compared to last week, showed varied average prices, though the top prices remained stable. Steers returning to the paddock fetched up to 378.2 cents, while those destined for feeding reached 368.2 cents, averaging 331 cents per kilogram. Heavy steers for feeding purposes topped at 336.2 cents, with an average of 313 cents per kilogram.

In the heifer category, light weight restocker heifers reached a high of 347.2 cents, averaging 291 cents. Medium weight heifers for restocking sold for up to 314 cents, averaging 293 cents, while those for feeding purposes peaked at 270 cents per kilogram. Heavy heifers designated for feeding were sold for as much as 280 cents per kilogram.

A noteworthy event at the sale was the auction of a high-quality pen of supplementary fed bullocks, donated to a local charity. These bullocks achieved a top price of 350 cents, with most selling around 282.2 cents, averaging 272 cents per kilogram.

The market for cows showed a slight decline, with medium weight cows selling up to 210.2 cents and averaging 196 cents. Good heavy cows reached a top price of 228.2 cents, averaging 210 cents per kilogram. Heavy bulls were sold for as much as 266 cents per kilogram.
