Opportunities for UK Pork Exports Highlighted by Mexican Visit

TL;DR: A Mexican delegation’s inspection of UK pork facilities aims to maintain and expand market access, especially for pork offal, highlighting ongoing efforts and potential growth in this crucial market for British pork exports.

Mexican Delegation Visit

A key moment for the UK pork sector has been marked by a visit from Mexican officials. The visit, seen as a “milestone,” focused on maintaining and expanding market access. Over two weeks, Mexican delegates inspected abattoirs and cold stores. They aimed to check compliance with national and EU laws on animal health, welfare, and food safety.

Partnership and Support

The visit was hosted by Defra in partnership with the UK Export Certification Partnership (UKECP) and AHDB, along with support from other government departments and agencies, including the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Mexico.

Importance of Mexico

Mexico is a major pork importer, consuming more pork than it produces. Pork consumption in Mexico has been increasing by 4.7% per year from 2017 to 2022. AHDB analysis shows that Mexican consumers view British red meat positively in terms of quality, price, and value.

Market Access

In 2021, Mexico opened its market to British pork exports. This year, they further opened it to include temporary access for pork offal and edible by-products.

AHDB Insights

Ouafa Doxon, AHDB Senior Market Access Manager, said the visit aimed to maintain the UK’s market access to Mexico and increase the number of authorised exporters. The goal is also to include offal products, which are in high demand in Mexico.

Doxon stated, “The inspection visit from the Mexican delegation is not the end of the journey. It does, however, represent a significant milestone in helping our pork exporters trade in this important market.”

Trade Development

Susana Morris, AHDB Senior Trade Development Manager, emphasised Mexico’s importance as a market. She highlighted the opportunities for pork offal products. Morris noted that the UK’s high welfare, sustainably produced pork products are well-placed to meet Mexican consumer demand.

Earlier this year, the UK pork sector participated in the Expo ANTAD trade show in Guadalajara. This showcased what the UK pork industry offers. The latest inspection visit is expected to open more opportunities for UK pork exporters in a growing market.

The inspection by Mexican officials marks a significant step in the journey towards expanding UK pork exports to Mexico. The visit highlights the ongoing efforts and potential for growth in this crucial market. The partnership between Defra, UKECP, AHDB, and other agencies plays a key role in ensuring the success of these initiatives.
