The Australian red meat industry is witnessing a growing interest in its beef, lamb, and goat products in the North American market. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) is actively supporting exporters and levy payers to capitalise on these favourable trading conditions.
Key trends in Australian red meat exports to North America in 2023 have been mixed. Beef exports have seen an increase, while sheep and goat meat exports have declined. Despite this, there remains a strong and growing demand for Australian red meat in the region.
Beef Exports on the Rise
2023 has been a significant year for Australian beef exports to North America, with the beef slaughter ratio continuing to exceed 3%, currently ranking as the third highest on record. The United States is expected to be a crucial market for Australian beef in 2024 for several reasons:
- Economically, the US is outperforming other major beef markets, and the US dollar remains strong against the Australian dollar.
- The number of lot-fed cattle in Australia has increased by about 40% over the past decade. This means the supply of Australian grain-fed beef is at or near all-time highs, especially when considering the forecasted decrease in US grain-fed beef availability in the latter half of 2024.
- The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts a drop in US beef production of 508,930 tonnes in 2024, while demand continues to be robust.
Sheepmeat Exports and Opportunities
While Australian beef and lamb imports into the US are tariff and quota-free, year-to-date sheepmeat export volumes have decreased compared to 2022, amid a general reduction in US lamb imports.
However, sales are expected to spike during the holiday period, potentially creating more opportunities for Australian sheepmeat before the end of the year and into early 2024.
Expanding Sales and Education
The forecasted decline in US beef and lamb availability has heightened interest among US food service operators and retailers in Australian red meat products, with some considering these products for the first time. To assist trade partners in discussing Australian red meat products with customers, the Aussie Meat Academy serves as a resource for knowledge, inspiration, and motivation to support sales and marketing efforts.
The Aussie Meat Academy, with education sessions across the US, Canada, and Mexico, focuses on the quality, consistency, traceability, and sustainability of Australian red meat products. These sessions are designed to enhance understanding and promote the unique selling points of Australian red meat.
Recently, an Aussie Meat Academy event was held at the Marriott Hotels Corporate HQ in Washington DC, featuring MLA Consulting Corporate Chef Adam Moore, Business Development Manager Sabina Kindler, and Marketing Executive Claire Loker.
