The Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) is addressing the challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major public health threat. AMR occurs when common treatments become less effective against bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Iain McLachlan, the Chief Executive and Registrar of VCNZ has announced a strategy to manage this issue, aiming to work alongside initiatives by the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
The strategy highlights the role of veterinarians in prescribing antimicrobial products for animals and their responsibility in managing AMR risks.
A steering group will review antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship in New Zealand’s veterinary practices. This group will also consult with stakeholders and review global AMR strategies.
A discussion document, based on the group’s findings, will be shared for consultation before finalising the strategy. This process ensures that the strategy is informed by diverse insights from the veterinary community.
VCNZ’s initiative reflects New Zealand’s commitment to responsible veterinary practices and public health.
