Nebraska’s Department of Agriculture is injecting $5.1 million into its meat processing sector. This move, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, is part of the Independent Processor Assistance Program (IPAP). It’s a significant step to upgrade the state’s meat processing capabilities.
Sherry Vinton, the NDA Director, praised the innovative use of IPAP grants so far. These funds have already transformed operations, adding crucial equipment like freezers and meat grinders. The new funding round is expected to drive more such enhancements.
Eligibility for these grants is specific: processors must be either USDA-FSIS facilities or federally regulated custom-exempt slaughter and processing facilities. They should also meet certain size and revenue criteria.
While past recipients can reapply, the focus is on new applicants. Applications are open from January 16 to February 16, with decisions due by April end.
Last year, IPAP grants supported 62 livestock producers and meat processors, showcasing the program’s impact on Nebraska’s agricultural landscape. This year’s investment aims to build on that success, further strengthening the state’s meat processing industry.
