Over 30 US agricultural organisations have united to petition the President’s Export Council (PEC) for enhanced focus on expanding export markets for American food producers. This initiative aims to strengthen the US’s position in global agricultural trade.
The coalition’s joint letter calls for the PEC to establish a robust agricultural trade agenda. This includes enforcing existing trade agreements and fostering collaboration to diversify the US agricultural supply chain. Additionally, the groups urge the PEC to lead in global agricultural sustainability and climate change efforts, crucial for addressing the needs of a growing world population.
Signatories of this appeal include prominent bodies like the Meat Import Council of America, Meat Institute, National Pork Producers Council, and National Turkey Federation. These organisations represent a significant segment of the US agricultural industry.
The letter points out a 16% decrease in the volume of US food and agricultural exports, warning of a potential $17 billion deficit for 2023. This figure contrasts sharply with the $12.5 billion average annual trade surplus recorded over the last decade.
This collective action by US agricultural organisations highlights the need for strategic measures to boost the agricultural sector’s global trade presence and address sustainability and climate challenges.
